Chock full of tidbits on how/why stuff works, she breaks down things that I never even thought about and makes science easily understood.Ĭuriosity is human nature and I find myself more curious of everyday experiences and thinking about things in new ways after reading Helen’s book. This is a thoughtful debut by Czerski, a physicist/oceanographer. I can honestly say that you will not see everyday things in the same light again if you read this book and so, if you have any interest in how the world works and the strange, amazing patterns within it, give this a try.Īuthor and PhD Helen Czerski loves physics and wants others to share her enthusiasm. She does not dumb down her writing, but simply makes it accessible, understandable and entirely riveting. You have such titles as, “What goes up must come down,” “Why don’t ducks get cold feet?” and “Spoons, Spirals and Sputnik.” Who can resist? Being a child of the Seventies, when science was not a compulsory subject, my scientific knowledge is less than zero, but I found myself enthused by this book. From these innocuous springboards, she uses these examples to investigate much greater events in science and technology, using these seemingly simple beginnings.Įven the chapter titles in this book are delightful. Each chapter begins with something everyday – something small such as trying to get ketchup from a bottle or stirring a cup of tea. How many times have you heard someone say (possibly one of your children…) that a particular subject at school is not relevant to them personally? In this book, author Helen Czerski attempts to show us how physics affects everyday life. You may never look at your toaster the same way. But just occasionally a small one can produce something delicious”) gravity (drop some raisins in a bottle of carbonated lemonade and watch the whoosh of bubbles and the dancing raisins at the bottom bumping into each other) size (Czerski explains the action of the water molecules that cause the crime-scene stain left by a puddle of dried coffee) and time (why it takes so long for ketchup to come out of a bottle).Īlong the way, she provides answers to vexing questions: How does water travel from the roots of a redwood tree to its crown? How do ducks keep their feet warm when walking on ice? Why does milk, when added to tea, look like billowing storm clouds? In an engaging voice at once warm and witty, Czerski shares her stunning breadth of knowledge to lift the veil of familiarity from the ordinary. She guides us through the principles of gases (“Explosions in the kitchen are generally considered a bad idea. In Storm in a Teacup, Helen Czerski provides the tools to alter the way we see everything around us by linking ordinary objects and occurrences, like popcorn popping, coffee stains, and fridge magnets, to big ideas like climate change, the energy crisis, or innovative medical testing. But these familiar surroundings are just the place to look if you’re interested in what makes the universe tick. Our home here on Earth is messy, mutable, and full of humdrum things that we touch and modify without much thought every day. But did you know that the key to unveiling the secrets of the cosmos is as close as the nearest toaster? Take a look up at the stars on a clear night and you get a sense that the universe is vast and untouchable, full of mysteries beyond comprehension. While your boss monitoring your every move is definitely creepy, it's perfectly legal. "It can see into everything from what apps an employee has open to with whom they're chatting to, what they're saying."įor anyone who has ever checked a personal email, bank account balance, or the results of a medical test on a work computer, the above described scenario is a nightmare. "Once an incognito agent is installed on a machine (sometimes hidden in the Running Processes list under disguised names), the most powerful employee monitoring tools can act as an all-seeing eye," notes the product review (opens in a new tab). Of the ten "employee monitoring tools " examined, seven offer "keystroke recording," and nine allow the employer to take screenshots of a worker's computer screen. PCMag (which, like Mashable, is owned by Ziff Davis), published a review (opens in a new tab) of this type of software earlier this year. Keyloggers are a particularly invasive type of corporate monitoring software designed to keep tabs on employees' actions, but are far from the only kind. In the aggregate, they can record everything from the content of the emails you write, to your passwords, to any personal chats you have in a corporate Slack or private social media account accessed from your work desk. A keylogger is a generic term for piece of software that runs in the background of a computer and literally records every single key you press, often along with every mouse click you make. If you're not very familiar with keyloggers, don't fret, many people aren't. And yet, the true threat often lurks undetected behind the scenes: keyloggers recording your every keystroke and sending them away for upper management review. The struggle to avoid even accidentally clicking on NSFW material as we go about our busy office lives is, for many, all too familiar. Using an employer-issued computer comes with its own specific set of privacy risks. What happens on your keyboard does not stay on your keyboard. Privacy Please is an ongoing series exploring the ways privacy is violated in the modern world, and what can be done about it. Édouard Manet (23 January 1832 – 30 April 1883) was a French painter - one of the first nineteenth century artists to approach modern-life subjects. 1867-1870 'I am influenced by everybody.' He changed the way men dressed – and still influences the way they dress today. And yet, although his novels are not read much nowadays, there are still reasons to celebrate this writer. His popularity waned quickly, even during his own lifetime, and his reputation has never been restored. For a short while during the 1820s and 1830s, he was the most popular novelist in Britain, until he was eclipsed by an even more popular and successful man, Charles Dickens. This time, it’s the turn of Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873), or, to give him his full name, Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (which should be enough Lyttons for anyone). In our first piece, we took the Victorian novelist and poet George Meredith as our subject. The Librarian Spy came to me at just the right time, in the middle of a book slump, and in just the right place, in an airport before a long nighttime The Librarian Spy came to me at just the right time, in the middle of a book slump, and in just the right place, in an airport before a long nighttime flight. This is the second article in our occasional series, ‘Five Reasons’, in which we take a neglected figure from literary history and endeavour to unearth five interesting or surprising things about them. WWII fiction is something I only read sparingly, but I enjoyed Martin's last offering, The Last Bookshop in London, and this one was even better. Martin's on-the-ground research sparkles without feeling like a travelogue. I got a good grasp of life in wartime Lisbon, and what it was like to live under the occupation in Lyon. (Having braved cobblestones in high heels, I sympathized extremely with Ava tiptoeing is the only way I found to make it without twisting an ankle.) It wasn't just the standard moaning about nylons and lipstick-Martin included relevant details about the limited colors of shoes available to women due to US rationing, pop culture, and what it's like to physically walk on the streets of Lisbon. My one complaint is that the dual narratives did not intersect very well. They coexisted, but did not quite inform each other or play off each other. They were both enjoyable (view spoiler), but there was something missing. Maybe I will find it in a future reading of this book. I can't recall the last time I wanted to read a WWII novel a second time, but The Librarian Spy is already tugging at me again. Martin's writing grows even more beautiful, and her imagery was often delightful. I'll be looking for more books by her in the future, though I must say I hope she branches to another time period. The Librarian Spy will always hold a special place in my heart for being a serendipitous find at an airport newsstand. I always look but so rarely buy there, because books are the first thing I pack for travel. This was a necessity, much like words are to the characters of this story.Ĭontent warnings: wartime violence (some quite disturbing) but not described in much detail. When you lose count of how many times the author resorts to "Exploited Young Woman Who Actually Kind of Enjoys It," the red flags snap quickly in a strong wind of misogyny. I love, love, the whole conceit of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, but the short story here that promises to be the prequel doesn't even deliver on that. And I am exhausted by Ruiz Zafón's treatment of women in his novels. In the GFXBench Car Chase on-screen test, the phone scored just 5.9fps, which is a little bit better than the G6 (3.2fps), but not enough to make a difference in actual gameplay. This translates to a good ability to multitask, but not to terrific gaming performance. In the PCMark benchmark, which measures a variety of tasks like web browsing and video and photo editing, the 6.1 scored 4,856, which is a bit higher than the Snapdragon 450-powered G6 (4,583), and much better than the Alcatel 3V's MediaTek MT835A-powered performance (3,151). Outdoor visibility is decent, and the screen gets reasonably bright, but direct sunlight can prove to be a challenge. The screen washes out a bit from the sides, taking on a filmy appearance. While colors look accurate, viewing angles aren't the best. The screen is crisp, with pixel density that works out to 403ppi, just a little less crisp than the 18:9 G6 (424ppi). The front of the phone has a 5.5-inch, 1,920 by 1,080 IPS display with a large top and bottom bezel. The left side features a SIM/microSD card slot that worked with a 256GB card after I formatted it.
